“What is a .tel domain?”

Put simply, the new .tel domains were created to offer you a single point of reference for all your professional and business contact information on the internet.   You can update your contact information globally and in real time across the internet, making you and your company much more accessible.

From Wikipedia;

“The domain name .tel is a top-level domain (TLD) in the Domain Name System (DNS) of the Internet. It was approved by ICANN as a sponsored top-level domain, and is operated by Telnic.  Telnic announced in January 2011 that over 300,000 domains had been registered since the start of general availability on 24 March 2009.

A substantial drop of mostly IDN .tels occurred at the beginning of 2014 – the current total registered .tels as at 3 February 2014 is 148,144 according to the Daily Stats monitor at http://registrarstats.com/TLDDomainCounts.aspx.
The 2014 Monthly Stats for .tel can be monitored at http://www.hosterstats.com/DomainNameCounts2014.php.

The domain’s purpose is to provide a single name space for Internet communications services. Subdomain registrations serve as a single point of contact for individuals and businesses, providing a global contact directory service by hosting all types of contact information directly in the Domain Name System, without the need to build, host or manage a traditional web service. Additionally, as of July 2010, every tel domain acts as an OpenID and an increasing number of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) clients can address a tel domain name directly. The TLD implementation also supports the hCard micro-format.”

So, why should anyone care about owning a .tel? Because it actually does some pretty cool stuff by inserting your contact info into the DNS. Huh?  Yeah, it actually does that.  It will put a businesses name, address and phone number right into the DNS. Check out an example of the KnowEm.Tel by clicking here. All of information you are seeing on that page is in the DNS record for knowem.tel.

Again from Wikipedia..

“As Telnic has enabled the DNS records to be encrypted using 1024-bit encryption and stored in sub-folders which are hidden until paired with a public private key handshake with individuals, there is protection from spammers. As tel also supports any type of contact information, concierge services like temporary email addresses, temporary telephone numbers and so on can all be utilized for additional protection of public information.address a tel domain name directly. The TLD implementation also supports the hCard micro-format.”

It’s pretty darn cool.  So we are very happy to announce our partnership with Webnames.CA and also happy to announce that the purchase of any business level or above package will include a free .TEL domain registration plus hosting for a year. On the completion of your purchase you will be emailed a special coupon code that can be used at http://webnames.ca to register your free .tel name. If you are currently an enterprise or white label client please contact your account administrator to receive your free .tel coupon codes. We can not guarantee all of your accounts will be granted one and this is on a first-come, first-serve basis for now.

Also keep an eye out for KnowEm Perks which will be coming soon, a place where we’ll be offering some great deals for all of our current and future clients.  We’ve got some big plans, including everything from free web hosting and free trials to some pretty amazing web services.

    I didn’t know about the .tel domains. It seems like a great idea, but might also offer an opportunity for squatters to grab an important domain. I’m curious to see a .tel url in action. Would it be possible to see one?

    Thanks! We think so too 🙂

    And although we’re giving them away free with purchase, don’t let that stop you from visiting webnames.ca and grabbing your own if you’d like to directly purchase it from them. It’s only $22 and comes with free hosting, and it updates the global registry, so it’s great for getting your business info out there.
